WA Youth Gets Moving with Gym Warriors Community Collective

14 December 2022

Over the past several months, Gymnastics WA delivered Gym Warriors Community Collective (GWCC), a one-off program based upon the popular Gym Warriors program.

Gymnastics WA successfully received funding through Healthway’s Physical Activity Innovation Challenge Project (Innovation Challenge). The purpose of the Innovation Challenge was to increase the physical activity levels of inactive young people aged 15-20 years old, those who face health inequities and those who do not engage in regular physical activity or traditional sport. Thanks to this funding, the program was provided free of charge to participants.

GWCC transported gymnastics out of the traditional gym setting and into the community, therefore removing barriers to participation such as access facilities, cost and transportation. Taking place in select PCYCs across Western Australia, the program provided non-traditional gymnastics-based activities to young people in both metropolitan and regional WA.

Sessions included an obstacle course style of activities using parkour and free running skills that linked in with gymnastics at its fundamental level. Participants had a blast tackling the variety of activities, racing each other to see who could get through the circuits fastest. Gym Warriors coaches guided participants through the courses to ensure the program was safe as well as enjoyable.

Following the activity session, participants engaged in discussion and education around wellbeing topics. This included workshops by mental health charity A Stitch In Time and Foodbank WA, which taught participants the importance of mental health and how to create simple, healthy dishes. Both workshops were well-received.

My son absolutely loved the cooking workshop – came home very excited,” said the parent of one participant, “He has been cooking a few items from the recipe booklet provided at the session. What a great idea to teach the kids how to cook!”

Gymnastics WA wishes to thank Healthway, WA PCYC, Foodbank, A Stitch In Time, and the Gym Warriors coaches who helped make this program a reality. Gymnastics WA is proud to have partnered with great organisations to bring gymnastics and health awareness to young people across Western Australia.
