Gymnastics WA Statement

20 April 2022

Sport Integrity Australia has today published the report of its review of the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Program.

We acknowledge and have heard the courage and genuine concern of all those who have been involved in this review. We share the desire of those who have made submissions to see that the sport we all love is safe for everyone. We have an unwavering commitment to provide an environment that respects the rights and supports the wellbeing of every participant from the grassroots through to the state and national levels of the sport. We want a sport where the athlete is safe, empowered and their experience is one of personal fulfilment.

Nothing is more important to Gymnastics WA than the safety and wellbeing of our participants. Gymnastics WA has a zero-tolerance approach to any form of abuse – and shining a light on these issues is a critical step to addressing them.

Gymnastics WA unreservedly apologises to all athletes and family members who have experienced any form of abuse participating in the WAIS Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Program.

Gymnastics WA, as a State-based organisation under the umbrella of the national body, is committed to continuing to work with Gymnastics Australia to implement the recommendations contained in both this review and the report released by the Australian Human Rights Commission in 2021.

Gymnastics WA has been working over recent years to improve education, reporting, investigation and support for athletes and coaches. Gymnastics WA and Gymnastics Australia will continue to improve our policies and processes in line with the recommendations of this report, and in consultation with all relevant agencies.

We encourage anyone with concerns about their experience in gymnastics to contact Gymnastics Australia’s Integrity team on 03 8698 9700 or email [email protected]. Other support services are available, including Lifeline Crisis Support – 13 11 14 and Kids Help Line – www.kidshelpline.com.au.
