Gymnastics Australia's Education Manager Delivers Child Safeguarding Series in WA

From Wednesday November 16 – Saturday November 19, Gymnastics WA delivered a Child Safeguarding Education series to help ensure our children and young people are safe in gymnastics.

Facilitated by Gymnastics Australia's Integrity Education Manager, Bonnie Anderson, the series provided the community with the knowledge, resources and strategies to proactively safeguard all members in the sport.

Sessions were divided into three separate categories to inform a cross-section of the community: athletes and parents, coaches, and clubs. Multiple sessions of each category took place to accommodate different schedules and the sessions took place in a variety of locations.

The session dedicated to parents and athletes involved a wealth of information and engaging activities. Participants learned how to create an environment that empowers athletes to share and ask for help. During the coaches’ session, Bonnie provided coaches with clarification in regards to safe spotting, language and communication. The clubs session included information on how to bring Child Safe Practices into a club setting and the resources available to assist with in-club education.

Bonnie explained Child Safe practises in a way that was clear, informative and engaging. A variety of examples and activities allowed our community to get involved and understand how to enforce Child Safe practices within their respective areas. We wish to thank Bonnie for sharing her experience with us for all 10 sessions of the series.

We would like to thank the clubs who helped us run the series: High Flyers Trampoline & Gymnastics Academy, Kings Gymnastics and Perth Gymnastics Academy. We would also like to extend thanks to those who attended the sessions – together we are pleased to ensure our participants have a welcoming and safe experience in gymnastics.
