New Regional Champions Crowned at the 2022 Go for 2&5 WA Regional Championships
Gymnastics WA held the second Go for 2&5 WA Regional Championships at the State Gymnastics Centre from 9 - 10 July, featuring over 170 WAG athletes from regional WA. After the success of our inaugural event, all clubs who participated last year returned again this year, joined by athletes from two new regional areas - Exmouth Gymnastics Club and Kalgoorlie PCYC. The event was also held during NAIDOC week, which provided Gymnastics WA with the opportunity to acknowledge and respect the continuing culture and contribution of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people throughout the event.
Aside from the excellent performances from the competing athletes, the event also featured interactive games from our partner Healthway, athlete prizes from our sponsor Pro Sportswear and displays from Esperance Twilight Aerials' TeamGym group, as well as Aerobic athlete Holly Davison from Northern Districts Gymnastics Club.
Several other activities were incorporated into the weekend, with training sessions at the State Gymnastics Centre for all competing athletes on Friday, along with Beginner Coaching and Judging Courses for regional participants. Clubs were also invited to attend a Regional Club Forum and Sundowner at the Leederville Sports Club.
Key statistics from the event included the significant growth in the regions in Level 6 & 7, with numbers increasing from 17 in 2021 to 34 in 2022. This doubling of numbers is clear indication that the knowledge and capability of our regional athletes and coaches is increasing, as well as the fact that athlete retention at this top level is also on the rise.
The event also served as a qualification event for the 2022 Country Team, which is scheduled to travel to Darwin in September. The selection of team members will be completed and released to the community in the next few weeks.
An event such as this would not be possible without the support of the Gymnastics WA staff, clubs, judges and volunteers. We also wish to acknowledge
our major sponsors for supporting this event:
Healthway
and the
Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries
.
Thank you to everyone who assisted with delivering another successful event and we look forward to bringing you a bigger and better event in 2023.
