Last Saturday evening brought the gymnastics community of Western Australia together to celebrate and recognise the achievements of athletes, coaches, judges and clubs across seven different gymsports throughout 2018. Close to 200 guests shone bright at the Garden Marquee, Perth Zoo, for a night filled with glitz and glam.
The Awards Night kicked off with a bang with our host, gymnastics great, Liz Chetkovich recognising all our nominees from all six competitive gymsports. The evening was officially opened by Gymnastics WA Executive Director, Milton Brooks and followed by Gymnastics Australia Chief Executive Officer, Kitty Chiller, who had travelled all the way from Melbourne to attend the Gymnastics WA Awards Night.
The awards began with Debbs van Hagen taking out the 2018 Gymnastics WA Official of the Year Award. Debbs is an FIG Category 4 Aerobic Gymnastics Judge and represented Australia as a Judge for the first time in 2018, judging at the Catanhede World Cup and Catanhede International Open competition in Portugal.
Leo Kimble was awarded the 2018 Gymnastics WA Coach of the Year for a very successful 2018 with his athlete, Eva Kierath representing Australia at the World Cup in Arosa, Switzerland and winning a silver medal at the World Cup in Maebashi, Japan.
Gymnastics WA were proud to welcome our newest life members, acknowledging their outstanding contribution that has been made to the sport. Congratulations to Tracy Holmes, Alida Scott and Karon Williams on this exceptional achievement.
The evening also saw the retirement of some of our top-level National Levels athletes, Claire Butterfield (Northern Districts Gymnastic Club), Keira Kikalis (West Coast Gymnasts) and Keara Nel (West Coast Gymnasts). In 2018, Senior International athletes, Darcy Norman from Spirit Gymsports (Women’s Artistic Gymnastics) and Zoe Tisdale from College Park Gymnastics Academy (Aerobic Gymnastics) also announced their retirements from Elite Gymnastics.
The winner of the 2018 Gymnastics WA Athlete of the Year was Eva Kierath from Trampoline Gymnastics. Eva had an outstanding competition season in 2018, culminating in a silver medal at the World Cup in Maebashi, Japan. We look forward to seeing what lies ahead of Eva in 2019, on the road to Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.
Gymnastics WA also welcomed the Fiona Harling to the stage to receive the Gymnastics WA Award of Merit – Service along with Desiree Jones (Women’s Artistic Gymnastics) and Trampoline Gymnastics athletes Eva Kierath, Jack Petrie and Keara Nel to receive the Gymnastics WA Award of Merit – International Representation. Allana Slater was also recognised for her selection to represent Australia at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.
The Go for 2&5 Gold Plate Award in partnership with Healthway, to encourage affiliated clubs to develop a healthy club environment, was awarded to West Coast Gymnasts for their efforts in promoting the Go for 2&5 message within their club during Term 3 of 2018.
Volunteer Club of the Year was awarded to Star-Mites Gym Sports, recognising their commitment to building their volunteer base, through courses and workshops as well as providing key volunteers at events such as Judges, Floor Managers and Announcers.
The prestigious Club Excellence Award recognises a club for a particular initiative that they have introduced within the year. Congratulations to Active Gymnastics, who were awarded for their progress in coach education and development.
Last but certainly not least, the much anticipated Champion Club of the Year Award went to Northern Districts Gymnastic Club for the 6th year in a row. Congratulations NDGC!
